The CycleOps 300 Pro Indoor Cycle is a very well designed indoor trainer, solid in use and yet very easy to move around, thanks to the wheels behind the flywheel. It arrives in pieces, but is easily put together with clear instructions. This trainer is all about comfort and flexibility as you can replace the saddle with your own as well as adjust the pedals and handlebars for a more comfortable fit. Let’s face it, if it is not comfortable, you are not going to use it so being able to adjust the necessaries is really an added bonus.
- Joule™ 3.0* offers three modes of performance training: dashboard, reports and activities
- PowerTap technology provides /-1.5% accurate power feedback to take the guess work out of riding.
- Precise resistance control lets you dial up the difficulty level for whatever intensity you can dish out.
- Four points of adjustment to duplicate the fit of your outdoor bike.
- Freewheeling hub lets you stop pedaling and coast whenever your pace dictates to recover between efforts.
- Stable platform for sprinting workouts or hill climbs.
- Dual capacity water bottle holder to keep you hydrated for the long haul.
- CycleOps saddle included.
- Saddle and pedals can be swapped out for a more customized ride.
- Wireless data transfer
The PowerAgent software which comes with the bike is brilliantly easy to use and other manufacturers take note it is compatible with a Mac. This software will track heart rate, speed, cadence and so forth, all of which can be transferred to your PC for later analysis. It is easy to adjust resistance; all you have to do is turn a dial on the end of the handlebar. This tightens or loosens the felt pads on the fly wheel.
The Cycleops 300 Pro Indoor Cycle is ideal for training as it is possible to pick a cadence and resistance and stick to them throughout the training session, leaving you to concentrate on keeping the power and your heart rate constant. This is something which is almost impossible to do on an actual ride, as there are so many variables, not only traffic in some cases, but also uneven terrain and weather conditions. With this bike, these parameters are taken care of for you, allowing you to concentrate on the rest of your session.
This trainer is very solid and stable, giving you the confidence to really push yourself without it wobbling or shaking beneath you. And by solid, I mean solid – the huge flywheel weighs 20kgs alone which will surely keep you firmly on the ground.
The braking mechanism relies on simple mechanical resistance via a set of felt brake pads on the rear wheel. Resistance can be easily adjusted using the knob on the right handlebar, which in turn tightens or loosens the brake against the rear wheel. One of the immediate drawbacks of this approach is that you cannot automatically adjust resistance to cadence which in turn means that you cannot pre-set a particular wattage and then do intervals at two different cadences. That’s not to say that you can’t do it, as you just need to adjust the resistance manually to achieve the same wattage.
In terms of the actual riding feeling, this trainer does a pretty good job in that the resistance is gradual and quite similar to on-road riding. The handle bars are built with aero extensions, allowing for a range of hand positions. The best part about all of this is that it does not come at the cost of noise as the bike is actually surprisingly quiet.
The Cycleops 300 Pro Indoor Cycle is designed to look like a bike and to ride like a bike and I must say that it really delivers on this level. The four points of adjustment mean that your ride is always going to be comfortable. One of the great things about this trainer is that you can analyse your performance and vitals after the workout, helping you to identify your strengths and weaknesses. I would highly recommend this trainer for all of your training needs.
