The Tacx Booster Turbo Trainer will make a superb companion for warm-ups, time trials and keeping up your fitness in those winter months. What separates the Booster from other entry-level trainers on the market is the ultra high powered magnetic brake that generates very high power at low speeds.
The Tacx Booster Turbo Trainer is really easy to setup but this is nothing less than we would expect from Tacx. What I like is that the brake has actually been built into the unit meaning that you no longer have to deal with a hot flywheel at the end of your training session. The frame itself is the sturdy Satori frame with those solid front legs to keep you stable.
As an entry-level trainer, the Tacx Booster Turbo Trainer does not come with all the extras such as a heart rate monitor or cadence and power monitor. If you want any of those features, you will need to buy those separately. What it does come with however is the skyliner front wheel support and the mounted handlebar resistance lever which has 10 settings. The lever is connected to the back unit with a wire that runs on the floor below the trainer.
As the name would suggest, the Tacx Booster Turbo Trainer is all about power. The 10 resistance level settings are enough to push you to your limits and beyond. In fact, I found that level 9 was enough to finish me off and I have been training recreationally for quite a while. This superb resistance offering is all thanks to the 8 eight permanent magnets found in the integrated brake system.
The ride quality itself is pretty realistic but is a long way from replacing the real thing. The only real let-down with this trainer is the flimsy gear changer. Sadly, it has a very cheap feel to it and will not last very long. In fact, my lever is already showing stress fractures after a month of use so it is only a matter of time before it breaks off completely. This is a real shame as the trainer itself is a great piece of kit.
When it comes to power and performance, the Tacx Booster Turbo Trainer is a great option. The 10 levels of resistance will give you plenty of option during each session and is guaranteed to make you sweat. The cheap resistance lever is a shame but if you are willing to risk it, this trainer would make a great investment.
